There is fake news out there that croquet is just played by the elderly at tea parties, but that is not the case. The game is a great equaliser where anyone can play. Where winning is not decided by your age, gender, strength, or weight but by mental skills and technique.
Those that have actually loved playing croquet include George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Winston Churchill, Harpo Marx, Darryl Zanuck, Sam Goldwyn, Lewis Carroll, Leo Tolstoy and Steven Hawking. Admittedly they never did play for the Petone Central Croquet Club, but they probably did not see our Open Day poster in the Petone Library.

The Petone Central Croquet Club is one of Petone’s oldest clubs and this year it celebrates its Centennial. You can read more about the proud history of the club on the history section of this website.

Above: Croquet is played at the Clubhouse site in 26 Tennyson St, Petone.
There are two types of croquet games played at the Club. One is Association Croquet which is an advanced game of croquet. The other is golf Croquet which is easier to learn and play. If you become a member, the clubs playing times are:
Association Croquet Club on Monday morning, Wednesday afternoon, Thursday twilight 5.30pm and Saturday afternoon. New players are welcome and coaching is available.
Golf Croquet Club on Thursday 1pm and Sunday 1pm club (from September to April).
If you are keen to give the game a go the Club is looking for new members. As mentioned, skill and touch are more important than strength in the game so it is one of the few sports where men, women, old and young can compete against each other.
If you want to join, or have any questions, please go to the ‘Contact Us’ section on this website. If you want to talk to a person please contact our Club Secretary below:

We have a “Have-a-Go at Croquet” Open Day each September at our club rooms at 26 Tennyson St, Petone but you are most welcome to pop down and watch a game whenever they play in their September to April season. If you like what you see, a member will be happy to give you a go!
